Charles Oliveira-Islam Makhachev lightweight title bout to headline

The ufc has booked a light-weight title fight among charles oliveira and islam makhachev to headline ufc 280 in abu dhabi, united arab emirates.

The UFC 280 pay-per-view event will take place on October 22 at the Etihad Arena. Officials announced the lightweight contest on Saturday.

It's officially a low-scoring UFC 155-pound title fight, though most of the game looks to Oliveira (33-8) as the defending champion.

Oliveira of Brazil won the 2021 title by knocking out Michael Chandler. In December, he successfully defended the belt against Dustin Poirier, but immediately resigned.

Oliveira defeated Gaethje in the first round of UFC 274. Officially, the result was a non-title fight for Oliveira.

Makhachev (22-1) is widely regarded as the biggest threat to Oliveira's reign. Makhachev, a longtime teammate of retired former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, has won 10 straight in the UFC.

A welterweight bout between Belal Muhammad and Sean Brady is set to take place in October, sources told ESPN.

Contracts have yet to be signed, but the two sides have agreed on a 170-pound bout to take place at the Oct. 22 UFC event in Abu Dhabi.
