Each year, NBA players work towards one ultimate goal: an NBA championship. Of course, there are other benefits to playing in the league, from being able to make hundreds of millions of dollars.
Grow your personal and professional brand through alliances. But winning a ring is the most important thing for almost any player.
This is especially true of James Harden of the Philadelphia 76ers. The veteran guard was traded by the Brooklyn Nets in the middle of last season.
Although his new team advanced further into the playoffs, the 76ers were still without a title, losing in the second round to the Miami Heat.
However, Harden sees the potential around him and is willing to set aside the money for a chance to win a championship.
Harden turned down his $ 47.3 million player option for next season. The move gives 76ers the flexibility to upgrade their roster - they now have the exception of $ 10.5 million.
Both points could be used for additional veteran talent. The team could also make sign and exchange moves to try and bring the right pieces.
By giving up, Harden shows a commitment to the 76ers. He is 32 and may not have another chance for a maximum contract.
